Curriculum vitae

Born on March 30, 1978 in Tábor. After graduation from the Jan Ámos Komenský Academy, Karel Coma went to England where he attended a Kodak Postproduction curse. Later he worked as a colorist in the film laboratories of Barrandov Film Studios. Within a six-year period, he color stylized over a fifty feature-length Czech and world-wide films. To mention a few: “Joan of Arc“, ”The mists of Avalon”, ”Dungeon & Dragons”, “The Knight’s Tale” and ”Dark Blue World“. For the American Criterion collection, Karel Coma remastered Milos Forman’s films “Hoří, má panenko“ (The Firemen's Ball), “Černý Petr“ (Black Peter) and ”Ostře sledované vlaky“ (Closely Watched Trains). Together with Filip Renč, Karel Coma remastered the film ”Rekviem pro panenku“ (Requiem for a Maiden), as well as many other films…

Karel Coma has also worked on many music videos and commercials (Globtel, Eurotel, Aquafresh, Beau Monde, …).

During his work in postproduction, Karel Coma has also assisted as a first A.D. on two feature-length films – a zombie comedy “Chocking Hazard“ and a children‘s film “Až kamna vystřelí“ (Till The Stove Blows Up). After six years, Karel Coma left the Barrandov Studios and together with the musician Dominik Renč, founded their own postproduction studio called the “UP studio”. At the same time Karel Coma also worked for “Frame studio”, where he apart from the edition of commercials also worked with an Oscar-winning director Gene Deitch on his short animated films “Diary of a Worm" and “I Lost My Bear".

In his free time, Karel Coma began shooting short independent films that gained great success at independent film festivals: film “Honzík“ (Little Johnny), “Kachní polévka“ (Duck soup) and “5 minut ve tmě“ (In the dark). His latest retrofilm “Okno“ (The window) received many awards.

In 2007, Karel Coma shot his feature-length film debut “Experti“ (Experts). Karel Coma is also the author of the screenplay and a book that goes by the same title (co-author Libor Merta).

At the present time, Karel Coma is devoted to the completion of three authorship screenplay projects: ”Karma“ (Karma), “Smrt v Bílém“ (Death in white) and “Paragraf X“ (Paragraph X).
